How to find glimmer

Hey!

Do you ever notice how easy it is to slip into “auto-pilot” mode? The days, weeks, months fly by and you check off a hundred little tasks on your list. Before you know it, you suddenly realize you didn’t slow down enough to actually feel and appreciate any of it.

I can admit that I have a long history of being guilty of this exact thing. So how do we fix it? Lamentations 3:22-23 says “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (NIV). So, the Lord provides new mercies, compassions, or evidence of his great love for us every morning. The “glimmers” of his love are everywhere, every day.

So I try to implement a small practice into my days – noticing the “glimmers.” You know, the tiny moments that make you pause and remember the love of God: sunlight through your window that hits the floor just right, a laugh with a friend, music that shifts your mood, that first sip of warm (or iced if that is your thing) coffee, and so on.

I know, it sounds simple, but intentionally noticing these moments and expressing gratitude to God for them changes my days. It helps me:

-        Feel more grounded.

-        Appreciate people and the world around me.

-        Stay hopeful and joyful, even when life feels messy.

If you want to try it, here are a few things that help me notice the “glimmers:”

1.     Pick one moment a day to name. It can be as simple as, “I loved that song on my drive to work.”

2.     Write it down or take a quick photo (I am a big “little moments in picture form” gal). It is amazing how a tiny note or picture can shift your mindset. (especially with the new phone cameras these days, geez).

3.     Share it with someone. Glimmers multiply when you talk about them—it is like throwing glitter confetti of God’s faithfulness (the kind that you keep discovering years later and can never get rid of).

The truth is… our days are full of beauty and evidence of the love of God – it is just too easy to overlook it in our world. The more you practice noticing, the more evidence or “glimmer” you will see.
